COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introduction to sociology, the scientific study of human social behavior. We examine sociology as both a subject and an activity. On the one hand, we survey the types of phenomena sociologists study, the types of questions sociologists ask about such phenomena and what they have discovered about them. On the other hand, we explore how sociologists go about doing this work – how they learn what they learn, how they know what they know. Students in the course have several data collection and data analysis experiences in which they do ‘real’ sociological work.

By the end of the course a student will:

  • be familiar with basic sociological concepts and theories;

  • have significantly developed his/her own ‘sociological imagination’, the ability to analyze & understand the world in which we live using a sociological perspective.
  • See Blackboard for course syllabus and other details.
