An introduction to social demography, the science of human population.
We begin by developing a demographic perspective, learning the key concepts and theories demographers use to analyze a population. Second, we examine more closely the 3 dynamic processes that affect populations: mortality(death), fertility(birth) & migration(movement). Third, we consider population structures & characteristics such as age & sex, life course & life chances, and urbanization. Finally, we explore the relationship between population and the environ
ment, contemporary issues in population policy, and the applied field of demographics.
To develop their demographic skills students prepare a term project in which they either compile a demographic analysis of their family history or prepare a demographic country study.
