Sex & Motherhood (SOC 364/WS327)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course we analyze selected issues in the regulation of human reproduction & family building, primarily from sociological and feminist perspectives.

Although the specific topics vary from year to year, the most recent class studied 1) birth control, 2) abortion, 3) teen pregnancy, 4) infertility & new reproductive technologies, and 5) pregnancy & childbirth. We examine historical and cross-cultural variations in how these phenomena are structured and are particularly interested in the variables of gender, class & race.

Students research and write a term paper whose findings are shared with the class. The course is largely discussion based, with students taking turns moderating class discussion of readings. Students also keep a journal in which they log responses to both class and homework material.
