Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to go to New Orleans? I've heard a lot about crime in NOLA.
New Orleans, like most large cities, has its share of crime. And, violent crimes have increased in New Orleans since the hurricanes in 2005. It has for many years had one of the highest crime rates among large US cities. However, much of the city is as safe as any other city -- IF you use reasonable precautions. We will be staying in safe quarters in a safe neighborhood. The lodgings are provided by our host work site and are secure. We have been assured of our general safety while down there.
What about pollution and mold from the flooding?
Mold and pollution are a definite problem. IF you are allergic to mold, you will not be allowed to work in houses that were flooded. BUT, know that there are many important tasks to be done that will not expose you to mold. When working in hazardous sites, volunteers will be protected by appropriate gear -- federally-rated protective masks, gloves, jumpsuits and so on. During orientation, volunteers are thoroughly briefed on how to operate safely at the worksites.
