Presidential News and Media Coverage in 2008-09

  • November 5, 2009:  President Stephen C. Ainlay takes to the classroom to lecture on a topic that first drew him into the field of sociology.

  • June 30, 2009:  Union College joins five other upstate New York colleges to form a collaborative consortium known as the New York Six. 

  • May 16, 2009:  President Ainlay wins the 2009 Sphinx Award from the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha.  The award, given out by the Union chapter of the fraternity for 19 years, honored the president's "deep and profound" impact on the Union community and his efforts to foster a spirit of Pres with awarddiversity and mutual respect on campus. The award was presented by Muhammad Djata ’09, Alpha Phi Alpha president, at the 19th Annual Black and Gold Ball.

  • April 11, 2009:  The College's renovation of a baseball field in Schenectady's Central Park draws attention from local press, including the Daily Gazette, which featured President Ainlay and Mayor Stratton throwing out ceremonial balls between games of a doubleheader against Skidmore. Click here to read the story.   • April 8, 2009:  Union College is ranked #8 in a TrendTopper MediaBuzz survey examining college appearances in global print and electronic media, including on the Internet, in blogs, and in social networking media.  The survey was conducted by the Global Language Monitor.

  • April 1, 2009:  Goshen College announces that alumnus Stephen C. Ainlay will give the April 26th commencement address titled "A Pilgrim's Mind."

  • November 11, 2008:  President Ainlay speaks at a press conference announcing the installation of new security cameras around the perimeter of campus.  The camera project was covered in all the local press and on the evening news.

  • November 10, 2008:  An article in Schenectady's Daily Gazette covers the first Green Grants given out by the U Sustain committee and the Presidential Green Grant Program for student-initiated green initiatives on campus. (Registration may be required to view link.)

  • October 22, 2008: Union's president addresses the state of the economy and its impact on institutional operations in a letter to the campus community. 

  • October 12, 2008: A column by President Ainlay on “Education and Religious Fluency” was featured in the Albany Times Union. The piece was adapted from his address at the Capital Region Theological Center’s recent sixth anniversary celebration, titled “Religious Fluency: Notes on Competency in the 21st Century.”  

  • September 5, 2008:  Remarks by President Ainlay and other prominent leaders on the importance of integrating engineering into the liberal arts curriculum were featured in the Commentary section of The Chronicle of Higher Education (registration may be required to view linkCommission members
