Creating a Podcast
This tutorial will show you how to get started with your own podcasting at Union College.
Audio Podcasting
- Gather the source audio. You may use an existing audio, such as an audio file from audio CD, audio cassette,
etc., or record a lecture or an interview using digital devices.
- Get the equipment. To record a sound, you will need digital devices, such as
Olympus digital voice recorder, an
iPod with a special microphone (iTalk), or a computer with a microphone.
- Get the software. To download and/or edit the sound you recorded, you will need
an audio editing program.
We recommend the following software:
Audacity is a free program that can be downloaded from
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
GarageBand comes pre-installed on new Macs or you can get it as a part of the iLife ’06 suite.
- Get the audio to your computer.
- If you use a voice recorder to record the sound: Follow the tutorial for your voice recorder (see the first paragraph) to learn
how to download the recordings to your computer.
- If you use your computer to record the sound: Connect a microphone to your computer and pick
one of the recommended programs above, start recording.
- Edit it. Follow the tutorials for the particular program you picked above. Trim the sound, increase volume,
add music, and special effects.
- Save it. Save your files as mp3 (or AAC - to make it compatible with all mp3 players,
it is recommended to convert AAC files to mp3 in iTunes).
- Publish it. Follow instructions on Get Started page to publish
your podcast to share with others.
Video Podcasting
- Gather the source video. You may use an existing video, such as a video file from video DVD, a miniDV cassette,
a VHS tape, etc., or record a lecture or an interview using video cameras.

- Get the software. You will need a video editing program to work with the video files on your computer.
We recommend the following software:
