Using EndNote

EndNote 8 is a program that allows for the easy creation and use of bibliographies. It provides a simple way to store, manage, and search for bibliographic references in your own EndNote library. Remote bibliographic databases can be searched directly, and the results are automatically imported into EndNote. Search results from online databases can also be saved into files and imported in a few simple steps. EndNote is also a bibliography maker. It builds lists of cited works automatically. Use EndNote to insert citations and footnotes into your word processor.

Configuring a Connection to Union College

  1. Start EndNote.
  2. Under the Edit menu at the top of the screen, choose Connection Files → and then New Connection....

    endnote/09.gif
  5. The screen will be populated with a number of references that have been retrieved from the search parameters you have supplied. Select the relevant references by holding down the [Ctrl] button and clicking on each desired reference in the list. To save all selected references to an EndNote library, click the button in the upper-right corner of the window. Click New Library... to create a new library for all the records, or click Choose Library... to select a library off of your hard drive to which the records will be saved. If there is a library already open, that will also be available as an option at the bottom of the list.
    endnote/10.gif
  6. You may continue to do this for additional library catalogs, each time appending the new results to your existing library. Be sure to delete duplicate records after each update by right-clicking on the reference in your library window and choosing Delete References... from the drop-down menu that appears.

Cite While You Write

The EndNote toolbar is an add-on for Microsoft Word XP 2003. The toolbar should appear the next time you create a new document. If not, right-click on any empty area of the menu bar, and choose EndNote 8 from the list that appears. See this tutorial for information on positioning toolbars in Microsoft Word.
