Converting Audio File Formats - wav or aif to mp3
If you want to publish an audio file to iTunes U, the recommended file format is
mp3.
However, you may have your audio in different formats, such as
wav,
aif, or
wma. Olympus digital voice
recorder records audio in
wma format and iPod records audio in
wav format.
Converting Audio Using iTunes
- In iTunes, go to your library and right click (Control+click on Mac) on the audio
file which you want to convert.
- You can select multiple files by holding "Ctrl" (Command on Mac) key and
clicking on all files you want.
- Select "Convert Selection to MP3".
- If there is no "Convert Selection to MP3" option after you right click on the
files, instead there is a different format (AAC, WAV, etc.), you need to
set the MP3 format in "Preferences"
.
- In menu, click on "Edit" and find "Preferences". Select "Advanced" tab
and go on "Importing" tab inside the "Advanced" tab.
-
There is a field "Import Using". Click on the small arrow next to it and in the menu,
select "MP3 Encoder"
- Click "OK" and try to convert your files again.
Converting Audio Using Audacity
- Open Audacity, click on "File" - "Open" and locate the file you want to convert. Click "OK".
- Click on "File" - "Export as MP3". Find the location where you want to save your file to. Click "OK".
- In the pop-up window called "Edit ID3 Tags", you may fill in metadata about your audio file. After completing this,
click on "OK". It is important to provide your audience with file title, author, subject, etc.
- If the conversion is not working, you will need to download the LAME encoder. See our
Audacity Tutorial for instructions.
