NON-UNION PROGRAMS (WINTER and/or SPRING TERMS ONLY)

The Liaison Committee on Study Abroad (LCOSA) will approve a limited number of non-Union programs, provided that they address curricular needs that cannot be met by a Union program and take place during winter and/or spring terms. Normally, non-Union programs take place in countries where Union does not have a program.

It is extremely important that students planning on participating in any international program are thoroughly familiar with the general forms and policies, as well as the specific forms and policies for the international program being undertaken.

Calendar

Union students on a non-Union program abroad will be away from Union during the winter and/or spring terms. A student wishing to participate in a non-Union program abroad must be certain that the program is offered in the spring semester at the host institution. Applications for a non-Union program are due at the International Programs Office, Humanities 211, not later than close of business on Friday of the third week of spring term in the year prior to the proposed program.

For students wishing to spend a full year abroad, the William Cady Stone Fellowship allows one student per year to do so. Applications are to be submitted using the non-Union program form. Students applying for this fellowship should explain in their application essay the benefits of a full year over a semester/trimester program. Applications are due at the International Programs Office, Humanities 211, not later than close of business on Friday of the fifth week of winter term in the year prior to the proposed program.

Course of Study (Winter and Spring Option)

A student may transfer up to six courses back to Union if he or she takes the winter and spring option (away from Union for both winter and spring terms). However, most semester programs give credit for four courses. There are a number of ways to complete the additional two winter-spring courses at no cost (above normal Union tuition) to the student.

  1. If the host institution for the program will allow a fifth course for an additional fee, Union will pay that fee.
  2. If a student is credits ahead, then he/she may count one or two of these credits toward graduation at no cost.
  3. The student may take one or two fourth courses without charge upon returning to Union, if he or she received less than six credits for the selected program.
  4. Students may take one or two summer school courses, whether at Union or another institution. Union will pay tuition, but not room and board. Students who have completed the sophomore year are reminded that these courses may not be taken at a community college unless approved by the Dean of Studies.
  5. Students may participate in a Union mini-term, with the usual fee (currently $3500) being waived.
  6. If a student believes that there is yet another way to obtain a free fourth course, he/she should discuss it with Dean of Studies, Kristin Bidoshi.

Expenses

Students will pay tuition to Union for winter and/or spring terms (or a full year's comprehensive fee in the case of the full year program described above). Room, board, and fees will be arranged on a case by case basis. Union will pay tuition, room, board, and any fees to the host institution.
