Attendance

Tutors are expected to attend all meetings, work all their scheduled shifts, come on time, and stay until closing time.

If you must miss a meeting, please call or e-mail me ahead of time.

If you must miss a shift, please find a substitute and let the others working know of the arrangements you've made. Then note any changes on your timesheet. Unexpected emergencies happen to everyone, but rarely more than once or twice a term.If you find yourself missing a shift often, perhaps you should try to change your hours.

Pink Sheets

Pink sheets are the first step of our record keeping. If a professor wants to know whether a student has visited the Writing Center and what topics were covered, I check the computer. If I want to find out when we need more (or fewer) tutors, or what topics we're addressing most frequently, or which professors are sending their students to the Writing Center, I check the computer. If the Dean wants to know how many students are visiting the Writing Center, once again, I check the computer.

It's important to complete a form every time you tutor someone, even if the person is a friend, even if you tutor only for a short time, even if you're very busy that afternoon or evening. Complete the pink sheet the same day you tutor; then enter the pink sheet information in the computer the same day too--or as soon as you can.

Timesheets

Blank timesheets are stored in a folder in Room 226. You've been assigned a mailbox to store your timesheet. Make sure you fill it out completely and sign it so you can get paid. (I suggest you sign your timesheet at the beginning of each two-week period, just to be certain you don't forget.) If you work an extra shift or miss a meeting or shift, make sure the timesheet reflects that change. You should include an hour for meetings.

I collect the timesheets from your mailboxes and send them to payroll every two weeks. The last date for each pay period (always a Friday) is listed on the sheet. I don't keep copies of individual timesheets, so you may want to keep records yourself. I do keep a record of your total hours per pay period.

If you've forgotten to fill out a timesheet, you can submit it in a subsequent pay period.

W4 forms, etc.

If you've never worked at Union before, you must fill out tax forms and present appropriate identification before you can get paid. Forms and information are available in the Human Resources office, 36 South Lane.

All Students fill out Student Payroll Forms during the first meeting of each year.

Working with other tutors

Who goes first?
Every term, the tutors working each shift must decide who goes first. If you don't, an awkward pause will make the visiting student uncomfortable. Usually the tutors agree that anyone arriving ate goes first. It's fair: otherwise, the last person will tend to tutor less often than others. If you feel this benefits the punctual unduly, you might want to look at your own problems with arriving on time. If everyone is on time, you may decide on a rotation schedule--BEFORE the first student arrives.

All your stuff...
Make yourself at home while you're at work--but don't load up the tutors' room with your books, your letters, your CDs, your clothes. Sooner or later, the others will rebel at your sprawl. You've squeezed them out--or into an uncomfortably small space.

All the library's stuff...
Please don't drag the library's furniture into the Writing Center. Similarly, don't leave library books and CDs in the Writing Center unless you've checked them out--and return them to the library when you're done.

Using our computers...
Use the computers in the tutors' room (#226) to write papers, check your mail, etc. But remember others use those same computers. Students tutoring always have first priority to the computers--even if your paper IS due tomorrow.
