Peter Irving Wold Center for Science & Engineering

Wold

Beginning in fall 2009, Union College will begin construction of The Peter Irving Wold Center for Science and Engineering.  The interdisciplinary Center will serve as a platform for learning, research and innovation and will solidify the College’s role as a national leader in the integration of science, engineering and the liberal arts.

Slated for completion by winter 2011, the three story 35,000 square foot research and education facility will house space for interdisciplinary programs such as Biochemistry and Environmental Science and Engineering, a high performance computer lab, state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms, and flexible incubator labs for leading edge interdisciplinary research.

The Center will house a rooftop renewable energy lab and undertake research and demonstration projects related to energy and the environment.  The Center will also feature prominent display areas to showcase student and faculty members’ latest projects and discoveries.

In addition, the Center’s public spaces will draw Union’s liberal arts tradition into closer collaboration with science and engineering and will break down the distinctions between teaching and research.  The central glass-walled atrium, for example, will create an academic town square where informal student and faculty collaborations can take place and where members of the campus and surrounding communities will come together for academic, social and artistic programs.

The Wold Center is designed to achieve LEED Gold status from the U.S. Green Building Council through the incorporation of sustainable approaches to site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.  Renewable alternative energy technologies, such as solar thermal, photo voltaic and geothermal wells, are part of the design for heating, cooling and lighting the building.

Looking to the future, the Wold Center will become a prominent example of sustainable design and construction as well as a regional and national asset for its contributions to education and the advancement of science, engineering and the liberal arts in order to prepare students for today’s diverse, global and technologically complex world.

The Center will be named, through the generosity of John Wold ’38 and his wife, Jane, in honor of Peter Irving Wold, John’s father, and Professor of Physics at Union College from 1920-1945. *Click here for Wold Center virtual tour and photos*

Union College Facilities Renewal Program-

2009 marks the first year of Union’s 10 year facilities renewal program which is designed to attack the College’s deferred maintenance backlog with an annual budget of 3 million.  Each year a list of projects proposed by Facilities Services is presented to the Facilities Liaison Committee, the Planning and Priorities Committee, and the Facilities and Environment Committee for their review and approval.  Once approved the projects are designed and completed during the following fiscal year.  This year’s approved list, which is currently under construction, contains the following projects:

Renovation to Basement of Social Science – This project was the biggest challenge of all of the projects that the College undertook in the summer of 2007.  It was basically a complete renovation to an academic space that had not been significantly modified since it was built in 1964.  The project was completed in ten short weeks. The demolition scope of the project included removing asbestos, demolition of all hard surfaces, removal of all lighting and mechanical systems, and removal of the stage and projection rooms in the existing large lecture hall.  The construction scope included moisture proofing the floor surfaces, installing all new HVAC systems and ducting, installation of all new lighting carpet and finishes in the existing classrooms, creating two new electronic classrooms, and installing new furnishings and equipment in all of the rooms in the basement.  The result is a bright, well ventilated learning environment with state of the art furnishings in which to hold classes.  The contractor and the design team performed admirably, working double shifts most of the time to make sure the deadline was met.  This was an extremely ambitious project for the short amount of time that was available to do the work.  It is not the way we normally like to do a project, but because of the lack of “swing space” on campus, we had nowhere else to hold classes while the work was being done, so the project had to be finished over the summer. *click here for photos*

Travis J. Clark '00 Strength Training Facility – The College has received a gift from the Clark family to be used to primarily fund a strength training area which will be located in the lower level of the Achilles Center.   The project is located in  3500 square feet of unused space in the lower level where the old curling rink was located.  The space was renovated to include new lighting, heating and ventilation, new finishes, a control office area, and new weight training equipment for men and women varsity athletes.  The construction budget for the project is $240,000.  The project is complete and ready for use in the Fall Term.  *click here for photo*
