Throughout history, basketry has been used in every part of life and in every culture for an amazing range of utilitarian purposes: gathering, measuring, transporting, and storing food or supplies; trapping animals and fish; and crating poultry. Baskets filled with earth have been used as gun emplacements, and basketry techniques have been utilized to make armor as well as fencing for protection and separation of animals. We make use of shopping, waste, and gift baskets, and we use baskets for decorative purposes, as ceremonial objects, and as works of art.

No Boundaries was organized by the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston, and curated by Beth Ann Gerstein. It presents the work of 12 contemporary artists and basket makers who investigate space, volume, texture, line, themes, and materials through variations on weaving technique.
