Infinite Images
Technologies of Printmaking and Beyond

Mandeville Gallery, Nott Memorial
February 22, 2007 - May 06, 2007

The principle framework for Infinite Images was a survey of image reproduction technologies and the initial goals were twofold: first, we welcomed the opportunity to exhibit some of the rich resources of the Union College Permanent Collection and of Special Collections, Schaffer Library. Second, we planned to draw on this material to illustrate a history of printmaking and image reproduction, from woodblock prints to digital photography. But as we continued to discover unexpected treasures and looked more closely at those we knew, we realized that we could do more than tell the familiar story of printmaking, photography, and image reproduction technologies. The ways in which Union's collections reflect its complex history - and particularly its unique combination of sciences and humanities - made it inevitable that we broaden the scope. It was Union's own visual culture that inspired us to explore a constellation of issues that reach beyond the traditional boundaries of the fine arts.

This exhibition is curated by David Ogawa, Department of Visual Arts; Rachel Seligman, Director, Mandeville Gallery and Curator, Union College Permanent Collection; Setphanie Berlind '09; with assistance from Ellen Fladger, Head of Special Collections, Schaffer Library
