Irving Shapiro was born in New York City in 1918 and currently lives in Queensbury, New York. After earning science degrees and a Ph.D. in psychology, he has worked in education and communications in public health and medical settings.

 He was inducted into the Army in 1942 and ended his four-year military career in the Medical Administrative Corps as a first lieutenant. In Normandy, during the first six months following the June 1944 Allied invasion of France - the period during which he shot most of this unique photographic memoir - he was a Litter-Bearer Platoon Leader in a medical battalion. He was later attached to a general hospital during a period of battles in Germany and near Belgium.  Shapiro's decorations include a Purple Heart and a European Theatre Ribbon with Four Battle Stars.

Shapiro's photographs have appeared in a variety of commercial and educational publications, as well as in various photography exhibitions.
