What is ResNet?
ResNet is Union's residential computer network. Students use it to connect their computer directly to the Internet using a high-speed connection. It also allows access to Union's internal network features, such as storage space on the network drives so you can save your files and work on them from any computer on campus. Please remember that ResNet is to be used for academics, research, and official college business.
How do I get connected?
You make the connection by plugging you network cable into the jack. When you open your web browser, you should be automatically brought to the ResNet sign-in page if the page does not come up automatically, please notify ResNet staff at 388-8707
What equipment do I need?
In addition to a computer, you'll need a Network Interface Card (Ethernet Card). Most new computers come with these installed; otherwise you can purchase them at any computer dealer. You will also need to have a network cable.
I don't have a network cable. What should I do?
ITS does not supply cables to students. They are available at the campus bookstore, or at any computer dealer.
The cable that came with my new computer doesn't work.
That's a phone/modem cable. It is not a network cable, which are hardly ever sold with the computer. You'll need to get the network cable.
What software is required?
We do require that you have up-to-date antivirus software on your computer. It's also a good idea to have some antispyware and a firewall.
For College provided anti virus please use http://www.union.edu/Resources/Technology/ITS/software.php
There aren't enough jacks for all the computers in our room or suite. What should I do?
Some suites and rooms may have more students than planned when ResNet was installed. If you need an extra jack, contact the ResNet staff at x8707. The campus policy is to provide one network jack per student in the residential areas. If the network jack is not working you can contact ResNet.
Can we run a hub if there aren't enough jacks?
No. Hubs are prohibited in all circumstances and will not work if connected.
Why can't I get my wireless router to work?
Wireless routers are not allowed on the system, and will not work if connected.
Can I run a computer without ResNet?
Yes. ResNet is not required. You just won't have access to the network, but you can still run any programs.
Can I sign up for ResNet if I'm not living on campus?
No. The system is for on-campus students only.
Can I print from my dorm room to a network printer?
No. You will have to use your local printer.
Can I play computer games over the network?
You can play games online, but you cannot run a game server. Network games slow down the system. Any activity that has an adverse effect on the system is prohibited by the computer usage policy However, most gaming systems (Xbox, Playstation, etc.) are allowed, once they are registered.
How can my Macintosh connect to the network?
All Macintosh computers can connect to the Internet. Macintosh computers using OS X can connect to our internal network.
Can I use my gaming system on the Network?
Yes. Xbox, Xbox360, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation Plus, Gamecube and Wii are all allowed. However, all gaming systems must be registered or they won't work on the network.
