Information for Graduating Seniors

Graduating Senior Accounts:    User accounts for graduating seniors will be kept active through September 30, 2006. After that date, the accounts will be deleted.  If you are planning on continuing your education in a graduate program here at Union, you must submit a new Application for Computer Account (AFCA) at the beginning of fall term which indicates your change in status .  This will ensure that your account is not deleted with the rest of the Senior accounts.  Graduate AFCAs are available in Lamont House.

If you are not returning to Union College, you should begin moving your email to a new account immediately.  Do not apply for employment or graduate school using your current Union College email address.  Sometimes these types of application procedures can take months.  You don't want to chance missing important emails while you transition to a new address.

Alumni Email Accounts: The Office of College Relations offers, as one of many services to Alumni, free lifetime email forwarding.  For more information go to: http://www.union.edu/Alumni and click on the link for "Free Lifetime E-mail address" under Alumni Services or send email to alumni@union.edu.

Information for Returning Students

ITS will be retiring the server called idol and will be moving to new servers over the summer. As part of this process, the e-mail for students will be changing from webmail to Outlook Web Access (OWA). Your username and password will stay the same but the e-mail screen will have a new, modern look and will have additional features such as calendaring. All student accounts will be moved over the summer. We will be sending full details to you including a new URL to access your e-mail and instructions on using the new OWA interface.

Your web pages and other files currently stored on idol will also be moved, and you will have expanded file storage quota on the new server. Instructions on accessing your files on the new server will also be sent over the summer.

In preparation, please clean up your current email on idol:

Cleaning up your account:  Log into your idol account, and remove unwanted/unneeded files using the "rm" command.  If you are a webmail user, you should clean out your mail folders (especially the "sent-mail" folder), and remove unwanted "sent-mail" folders that you may have saved previously. Keeping your inbox small is also a good idea.  This will ensure that you do not exceed your user quota, and will help keep the overall system disk utilization down.  Also, remember to empty your trash often.  If you need help logging in to your idol account, using Unix commands, checking your quota, or accessing your email with webmail, you can stop by Information Technology Services to pick up some helpful Unix 'HOW-TO' sheets, webmail 'HOW-TO' sheets or you can access help via the Web at http://acaddocs.union.edu/HOW_TO.HTML.

Unsubscribing from listservs: If you are not planning on reading your email throughout the summer, it would be a good idea to unsubscribe from any email listservs that you may be on.  Instructions for doing this are usually included with any email that comes to you from the list.  This usually requires that you send a message to the listserv with the word "unsubscribe" in the subject line or body of the email.  If you have trouble removing yourself from an email list, contact Information Technology Services for assistance.
