William “BJ’’ Johnson, Executive Director
As Executive Director of U-START, BJ Johnson is actively involved in assisting start up companies develop and then execute their business plans by tapping an extensive group of mentors. BJ is skilled at coaching, mentoring and assisting the U-START member companies to progress toward a self-sufficient stage. BJ has held senior management roles with Digital Equipment Corp. (S/W, VAX Systems, and Network Businesses, as well as Sr. VP of Marketing), IBM (Networking), Compaq (Communications Division) and Cabletron Systems (Professional Consulting).
BJ was CEO of CrossComm and Merlin Technologies which has revenues of less than $40mil. Recently, BJ has been partner in J and J Consulting, which is a member of The Consulting Alliance. BJ has a BSEE from Penn State and an MSEE and MBA from Northeastern University.
Peter E. McElligott, Ph.D., Operations Manager
Pete serves on the U-Start Board of Directors. His experience with high tech startups, technology commercialization, proposal and grant applications, strategic planning, and business plan development is available to all U-Start tenant companies.
Pete is a founder and principal of H&MTA, a consulting firm specializing in assisting high tech companies in obtaining R&D funding for in-house product development. In this capacity he has interacted with over 200 local companies including many startups.
Prior to founding H&MTA, Pete spent almost 35 years at the General Electric Research and Development Center, starting as a physical chemist where his research contributions led to publications and patents in the areas of surface chemistry and physics, mass spectrometry, and tribology. He also served as a liaison scientist responsible for industrial technology transfer to various GE operating components, and as a manager of new business development with experience in technology marketing, customer development, proposal management, and contract negotiations.
