Union College Personal Safety Alert

This past Saturday night at 9:00 pm a student was approached on campus, on the walkway between West and Richmond, and her purse was taken after the perpetrator threatened that she had a weapon. The student immediately called for help and another student nearby reported to Campus Safety a license from the departing vehicle. The suspect's vehicle was followed by Campus Safety and the suspect herself was apprehended by Schenectady Police.

We are very grateful for the quick thinking of the students involved. Their alert actions resulted in the suspect's arrest. In reviewing this incident, we would like to suggest a few simple steps that we can all take to make Union a safer campus:

  • Enter Campus Safety's phone number (388-6911) as a Speed Dial number in your cell phones.
  • The Student Escort Service is available through Campus Safety as well. These students carry radios that can communicate any concern directly to the Campus Safety office.
  • Follow the suggestions on safe practices that can be found, along with Personal Safety Alerts, at the following web page: www.union.edu/personalsafety

We all have to remain alert to safety when walking on Union's campus.
