Campus Safety Staff
Members of the department are employees of the College under the guidance and control of the director of Campus Safety. Officers work eight-hour shifts to perform their duties, which include:
- Preventative patrol of grounds and buildings
- Emergency medical assistance
- Incident investigation and reporting
- Hazard control
- Crime prevention
- Parking and traffic management
- Special services including lockout assistance, noise and nuisance control, security escorts, lost and found, and any other needs associated with the quality of life, safety, and security of those on campus.
William A. Sickinger - Director
William A. Sickinger is a retired New York State Police Captain. During his tenure with the State Police, he has served in a wide range of assignments including:
- Emergency management program coordinator
- Safety and Health training
- Supervision of 135 officers and civilian employees providing community oriented police services to residents in a three county area.
In the field of corporate Safety and Security, he has provided consulting and training services for business and industry since 1987.
Education:
- Master of Science - Public Administration
- Bachelor of Science - Criminal Science
Continuing Education:
- Certified Emergency Manager; Federal Emergency Management Agency.
- Certified General Topics Instructor - Division of Criminal Justice Services, Bureau for Municipal Police
- Certified New York State Security Guard Instructor.
- Board Certified Protection Professional - CPP, American Society of Industrial Security.
Activities:
- Member: American Society of Industrial Security.
- Member: International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.
- Owner and Director of a New York State Approved Security Guard Training School.
- Adjunct Faculty: Hudson Valley Community College.
Christopher Hayen - Assistant Director
Responsibilities: Mr. Hayen coordinates and administers all aspects of the college electronic and computer based security systems. Mr. Hayen also coordinates the technical support staff to insure that the integrity of all systems are maintained. Mr. Hayen prepares lesson plans and instructs college personnel in systems operation and database maintenance; and consults with department heads concerning their security needs.

Gary Olsen - Traffic and Transportation Department
Responsibilities: Mr. Olsen oversees the Traffic and Transportation Department, providing traffic enforcement and transportation to the college community.
New in the transportation department: Two brand new 25 passenger buses which brings the service to a higher level. Reservation for Buses, cars and vans can be made at olseng@union.edu
He has been a member of the Campus Safety Department since 1994.
A life-long resident of Schenectady, he has a son soon to be entering College; his goal is to become a Pro-Bowler. He also has two daughters that specialize in School Activities and Shopping at the Mall.

Janice Underwood - Information Systems Specialist
Responsibilities: Ms. Underwood coordinates and supports the information systems for the department, including the reporting and Card Access systems. She has been a member of the Campus Safety department since 1988.

Ed D. Teller - Sergeant
Responsibilities: Sgt. Teller is the day shift supervisor. He has been employed with the Campus Safety Department since 1988. He is a life long Schenectady County Resident.

- 8 years service in NY Army National Guard as Military Police Officer
- Certified NYS Department of Criminal Justice Bike Patrol Officer
- Certified Zone 5 Police Supervisors Course
R. Michael McCrary - Sergeant
Responsibilities: Sgt. McCrary is the evening shift supervisor. He has been with the Union College Campus Safety Department since 1989. He was previously with the GE Plant Protection Department

David M. Stern - Sergeant
Responsibilities: Sgt. Stern is the night shift supervisor. He has been with Union College for more than 10 years.
