Examples of Homophobic Harassment and Attack
Jimmy is walking back to his dorm after a night of studying at the library. He notices a group of guys following him who eventually form a circle around him. The group of men start to push Jimmy around and call him names such as “gay” and “queer.” Jimmy tries to walk away but the guys shove him to the ground and repeatedly kick and punch him. Jimmy has experienced a homophobic attack.
Amy is talking with a group of friends about a movie that just opened up in the theaters. Marcy says that the movie is gay and that it shouldn’t have even been made. Amy is offended by this and tells Marcy that she should not make comments like that around other people. Marcy gets defensive and says to Amy “What are you, a fag?” Amy has experienced homophobic harassment.
Peter is a nice guy and keeps to himself. He has mentioned to a few friends that he might be gay. Some students overhear him talking with his friends and whenever they see Peter now they make homosexual remarks towards him. The students call Peter names such as “queer,” “gay,” and “fag.” Peter has experienced homophobic harassment.
