FAQs
Furniture/Linens/Lofts
Q: What furniture is provided in my room? And how big is the bed, so I can buy linens? Can I have a loft?
A: As you can see, we're perplexed with your question, but the answer lies beneath the clutter! Underneath this student's clothes and books, we found that you'll have an extra-long twin bed (36' x 80'), a dresser, a desk and chair, and closet space. For your convenience, you may opt to order linens before the fall term through Residence Hall Linens, 800.957.4338 (phone), 800.957.8338 (fax). Lofts are also available to be purchased or leased through Timerbernest (http://www.timbernest.com/; click College Home; select Union College, code UP45). These are the only lofts approved to be used at Union College and they can be a great way to save space!
Computer/Internet
Q: I have a computer. Can I connect to the internet? Is there somewhere I can go for help?
A: Yes! Internet and network connections are provided for each student. Information Technology Services (ITS) is available to help you with questions or concerns you may have. We're calling them now - we can't even get beyond the log-in window with our computer!
Phones/Voicemail
Q: What about phones, and voicemail?
A: Every student room has a phone connection, and each student has a voicemail box number. Be sure to bring your own phone; if you're new to the campus at the beginning of fall term, there will be information about long distance and voicemail in your campus mailbox in Reamer when you get here. If you have further questions, contact Telecommunications. If you're in the same room, like the two of us, try to talk in person instead.
Cable
Q: I have some questions regarding my cable. Who do I talk to about it?
A: The cable company we use, Time Warner Cable, will help you out with any questions or problems you are having, as well as provide you with information about premium options that you may purchase. Hooking up to cable is easy - just bring in a cable-ready TV with a coaxial cable, plug it in, and you're ready to go! However, we suggest not spending too much time at the home shopping channel. *click*
Laundry
Q: I've never done my own laundry before. Where do I do it, and how?
A: There are washers and dryers in each building and they are free to use! Each student pays $50 as a part of their housing deposit to cover the cost of using the laundry machines. However, you will need to learn how to do it on your own (read those labels!). Or, you may opt to contact Tucker Laundry Service, 800.374.2468, 518.382.0268, and 518.370.2501 (fax). They provide washing, drying, folding, and dry cleaning service on an account basis.
Food/Dining
Q: I'm hungry. Where can I get food on campus? How about off-campus?
A: We're always hungry, too, so we know where to go! On-campus, there are lots of options. West Dining is primarily used by first-year students, but is open to all. Upperclass Dining (for upperclass students, hence the name), the Dutch Hollow Restaurant, the Convenience Store (C-Store), and the Starbucks/Freshens kiosk (shown, our new favorite!) are all in Reamer and the Rathskellar is in Old Chapel. If you have questions about your mealplan or about eating on campus in general, contact Dining Services. If you want to eat out, check out this list of off-campus restaurants, look through the phone book, or venture out and explore!
Microfridge
Q: I've heard about this Microfridge thing. How do I get one? Can I bring my own?
A: You may rent a Microfridge unit by contacting Refrigerator Leasing, 607.431.9525. This unit combines a refrigerator, freezer, and microwave that operates on the low amperage required in the residence halls. Only one 'Microfridge' may be rented per room or suite. The refrigerator/freezer can also be rented without the microwave. Please note that the Microfridge is the only acceptable microwave for our residence hall rooms. No other microwaves are allowed. You may also bring in your own small refrigerator, as long as it is no larger than 5.0 cubic feet. And please don't keep food too long, or you might have some not-too-pleasant odors that are sure not to please your friends.
Insurance
Q: Should I get renter's insurance or something like that? Or am I covered on my parents' homeowners policy?
A: Parents should carry personal property protection for you while you are at college, and should contact their insurance agent about it. You may opt to purchase additional property protection through National Student Services, Inc., 800.963.7739 (phone). Union is not responsible for any losses of students' personal property.
Fun things to do
Q: I'm looking for something fun to do tonight. Any ideas?
A: Sure! Check out Student Activities for on-campus fun (they also do a big calendar in Reamer right by the Dutch Hollow Restaurant, which is what we're looking at), or you can explore some off-campus ideas.
Maintenance
Q: I've got a maintenance concern. Who do I tell?
A: We do, too - we can't get this window open! In order to get help, simply go to the online facilities request. You will be able to get email updates on the progress of your work request so you will know if there are any problems which delay getting your problem repaired!
Security
Q: Does Union have its own security department? What are their hours? What do they offer?
A: Campus Safety is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Not only do they patrol the campus and assist with issues as any arise, they also provide services such as a campus shuttle service (Seward's Trolley), a walking escort service, and assistance with your vehicle if you are having minor problems. There are also Emergency Phones located throughout the campus (signified with a blue light). There is a lot more information on their website, or you can always call x6911 from a campus phone. As you can see, they're a friendly bunch!
Health Services
Q: If I'm not feeling well, is there anywhere on campus that I can go?
A: You bet, Health Services is located in Silliman Hall, and assists students with healthy living, as well as treatment for illnesses and injuries. If the illness or injury requires hospital attention, we typically use Ellis Hospital, which is about 2 blocks from the campus.
Counseling
Q: I could use some help from a counselor. Is there a campus counseling center?
A: Yes! The Counseling Center is located in Silliman Hall, upstairs from the Health Services department. Friends are a good source for a listening ear, but sometimes it takes a little more than a comfy couch and a good friend (with a clip-board).
Other
Other: Gotta love that catch-all word! We can only answer so many of the questions here. If your question didn't make our list, try the Student Handbook (go to 'Policies & Procedures,' then 'Residential Community'). If that still doesn't do the trick, contact one of the Central Office Staff
