After leaving Union, I completed a MS degree in organic chemistry at RPI, then later a MAT degree at Union Graduate College.

Current Position: Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology company: Louisiana State University Health Sciences Ctr. Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. LSUHSC consists of a large research hospital, a medical school, and a graduate school.
Description: My current research focuses on using common bakers yeast as a model system to study Parkinson's disease. We express the human Parkinson's disease-related protein, alpha-synuclein (aS), in yeast and carry out genetic studies to determine how aS induces death of the yeast cells. The yeast model is very useful for rapidly screening drugs and genomes. Our goal is to find novel neuroprotective agents that prevent the slow degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Description: A PA anesthesiologist works in the operating room side by side with an anesthesiologist. They perform preoperative evaluations, administer the anesthetic agents, and monitor the patients. They are able to place invasive monitoring lines and in some areas, are able to conduct regional anesthesia. It is a great profession which is now expanding. There are currently only 2 schools (Emory + Case Western RU), however there are talks of more opening up in NY and Texas. This job is a completely different field than what I came from. My good old Union Chemistry text books have made the trip with me to Cytyc, and they will be getting a workout as I start to dig in to my new job!

Description: I finished my doctorate in organic chemistry at Brown University and I now work in the Intellectual Property Group of Ropes and Gray in Boston, Ma. So far, the career change has been great although with the amount of chemical literature I read, I would not say it is really a career change but a role change. I write patent applications, do patent prosecution, validity and freedom-to operate searches etc. I think all young scientists who enjoy writing should take a look at patent law some point!
