Werner taught analytical chemistry courses at Union College for 36 years, retiring in December 2007.  In 2002 he was the recipient of the American Chemical Society’s Award for Research at an Undergraduate Institution and was recognized by Juniata College as one its outstanding science alumni in 2007.  He was recently selected as American Chemical Society Tour Lecturer on the topic of performance-enhancing drug use in sports. The lecture is based on a course entitled Chemistry and Athletic Performance that he developed at Union with the aid of Dr. Don Catlin and his staff at the U.S. Olympic Analytical Laboratory at UCLA and Anti-Doping Research, Inc.  Articles about the course and Werner’s interest in this topic have appeared in the Albany Times Union (May, 2007) and in the Daily Gazette (June, 2009).
