About the Program
The English program at Union is full, varied, and vital. For over 175 years it has grown to incorporate shifting tastes and new approaches to literary study. This tradition continues today, fostered by the variety of professional styles and personalities in the department and by our belief in the ideal of an open academic community.
The department is committed to providing students with a sound knowledge of the fundamentals and history of their language and of its finest literature. All of the courses emphasize the basics of creative and critical reading and clear writing as the foundations of the study of literature and as skills useful in a wide range of career applications.
