Teaching Engineering in a Liberal Arts Environment

Mechanical Engineering Program

The Mechanical Engineering program of study begins with a core engineering curriculum in the freshman year with coverage of basic math and science, an introduction to engineering and general education courses. The sophomore year concentrates on fundamental engineering science topics. The junior year is devoted to a study abroad opportunity and advanced mechanical engineering topics. The focus of the senior year is engineering design and a professional development with capstone courses in machine design, thermal-fluid design, and mechanical engineering seminar. Along the way students fulfill Union College's General Education Curriculum and are encouraged to minor in a filed outside of engineering.

The culmination of the Mechanical Engineering program is the senior project. Students work individually or in teams with a faculty mentor on a comprehensive engineering design or research project that draws upon and integrates the study of the first three years.

Fundamentals are reinforced along the way through significant hands-on design and laboratory experiences. Class sizes are small and all classes and labs are taught by the faculty.

The program is accredited by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) under Engineering Criteria 2000.
