Canons of the Mechanical Engineering Departmental Academic Integrity Policy*

  1. Treat others as you would like them to treat you (Golden Rule)
  2. Do what you say you will do.
  3. Never divulge information given to you in confidence.
  4. Accept responsibility for your mistakes.
  5. Never become involved in a lie.
  6. Never accept gifts that compromise your ability to perform in the best interest of your organization.

Departmental Policies

  • Policy 2009_02: Students on the Prague Exchange Program will be given credit for one technical elective (4 total credits or more), the Czech culture course, and all other courses will be credited as free electives.
  • Policy 2009_01: Mechanical Engineering students will not be allowed to participate in department sponssored activities if they are on Special Academic Warning the term before, or the term of, the activity.
  • Policy 2006_01: A minimum grade of C- must be earned in a prerequisite mechanical engineering course(s) in order to enroll in ME courses.
  • Policy 2004_01: For every student that works with a faculty member on Senior Project for 2 to 3 terms the advising faculty member will be given 1 hour of teaching credit up to 4 hours with a hard upper limit of 5 students.

Mechanical Engineering Academic Integrity Violation Procedure

  1. First Offense
    1. All instances of academic dishonesty are to be brought to the attention of the department chair no matter how small.
    2. The department chair will create a file outlining the circumstances surrounding the instance of academic dishonesty.
    3. The department chair will review the details of the instance of academic dishonesty with the faculty for a recommendation on how to proceed.
  2. Second Offense
    1. The department chair will amend the students file outlining the circumstances surrounding the instance of academic dishonesty.
    2. The department chair will report the instance of academic dishonesty to the faculty and request a recommendation for punishment that will be forwarded to the Dean of Undergraduates.
    3. The instance of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Undergraduates.
  3. After graduation the departmental files will be destroyed.

Requirements for Mechanical Engineering Honors:

  1. Conduct in a manner consistent with the code of ethics of the Professional Engineers and the Union College Academic Honesty Policy.
  2. A cumulative index of 3.3 or better for all courses taken at Union College.
  3. An index of at least 3.3 in Mechanical Engineering courses with grades of at least “A” or “A-” in four of these courses. The Mechanical Engineering courses are as follows: MER101, MER201, MER212, MER213, MER214, MER231, MER232, MER301, MER311, MER312, MER322, MER331, MER333, MER419, MER439.
  4. Grade of at least B+ in MER 497 and a grade of at least A- in MER 498.
  5. A Senior thesis must be written which conforms to the specifications of Schaffer Library (details available at the Library, on the Web, or from your Senior Project adviser). One copy of the thesis must be submitted to the Library though the Mechanical Engineering Department Secretary.
  6. Participation in the Student Speaking Contest sponsored by the Union College A.S.M.E. student chapter. (See the A.S.M.E. faculty adviser for details.)
  7. The final six terms of the program must be completed at Union College unless enrolled elsewhere in a study program approved by the College.
  8. Nomination and a majority vote of approval from the Mechanical Engineering Department faculty.
