Statement: “Learning a language always complements whatever field you are studying in unexpected ways. For me, studying Spanish brought me to Chile on an independent study abroad in which I studied a form of indigenous medicine of the Mapuche people. Through my study of Spanish, I was able to interact with the Mapuche community of Pehuenco and learn about their various healing practices, an experience which has expanded my view of the concept of health to include dance and rhythm medicine. Many doors open and ideas spread when you learn a different language.”
