Representing and Creating the Human Body: Past, Present and Future 2011
Thanks to the remarkable success of the our first three Alumni & Friends Symposia, which gave participants a unique chance to engage intellectually with the College and each other around topics of national importance, we are pleased to invite you to the fourth annual Alumni & Friends Symposium entitled Representing and Creating the Human Body: Past, Present and Future.
The symposium will be held here at Union as a prelude to the Homecoming & Family Weekend on October 27 - 29, 2011, and will focus on exploring the altered, constructed and adorned body; cyborg and sci-fi post-humanism; and the performance and physical extremes of the body. Professors Lorraine Morales Cox (Visual Arts) and Anastasia Pease (English) will jointly lead the two-day session.
Most of us rarely have a chance to step back from our hectic day-to-day lives and engage in thought-provoking discussions with colleagues and specialists about contemporary issues. Our alumni symposia are designed to bring together a distinguished group of thinkers and leaders in a given field or expertise to participate in the type of energizing exchange of ideas and creative problem-solving for which Union is known.
In addition to a distinguished keynote speaker, in-depth discussions and breakout sessions, the weekend will include performances and exhibits. This is a great opportunity to experience again all the elements that made academic life at Union so rewarding – a chance to interact with current students and faculty, as well as with other alumni.
Thanks to the symposium’s generous benefactors, hotel accommodations will be provided for you during your visit, so you need only make travel arrangements.
In order to facilitate a seminar-type setting, the organizers have invited only a select group of alumni to participate. Reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, so please indicate your interest by September 15. I hope you will consider setting aside the time on your calendar to join us. We will be updating the website with all the details on the agenda, schedule and speakers, but in the meantime, please feel free to call or e-mail Tammy Messercola, Director of Alumni Relations (firstname.lastname@example.org or 518-388-6716) to reserve a spot or get additional information.
