KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. David Ferrucci, IBM Fellow and leader of the Semantic Analysis and Integration Department at IBM’s T.J. Watson’s Research Center. Dr. Ferrucci is perhaps best known for heading the team of researchers that developed “Watson,” the natural language processor recently featured on the quiz show “Jeopardy,” where it claimed victory over its human competitors. “The opportunity to pursue an exploratory project that took an area of science that I was most interested in, and to bring together a team of world class people, and push the limits – it doesn't get any better than that.” |
Union College will host the fourth annual Symposium on Engineering & Liberal Education this spring to continue the discussion of the rationale for and methods of integrating engineering, technology, and the traditional liberal arts. Past symposia have focused on how engineering contributes to a liberal education, the importance of a liberal education for engineers, and exploration of the intellectual relationship between engineering and the liberal arts. The 2011 symposium Program Committee will expand the discussion to explore the impact of integration on innovation and entrepreneurship, and invites contributions and participation from all constituents to share challenges, best practices and results.
The Symposium will include a "Integrate to Innovate" Faculty Institute on the afternoon of Saturday, June 4. The Institute will consist of a set of workshops for faculty to learn more about how to enhance their courses and curricula by integrating engineering and the liberal arts.
