Catalog Records for Items in Multiple Formats
1. General Policies
Union will use a single record approach to cataloging in some situations, specifically for online journals, where Schaffer Library also has print holdings. That is, all holdings for a periodical item—no matter what format the item is in nor how many formats the library holds for the item—will be cataloged on a single record. For periodicals, that means starting with a base record for a format held at Union, usually print, and adding information about alternate formats held at Union to the base record.
In changing with a long standing policy, Union will use the separate record approach when cataloging some serial items as well as subscription databases and indexes, where Schaffer Library also has the same title(s) in print format. (New policy as of Spring 2004)
