Finding Journals in the Library
How you go about finding journals in the Library depends on where you are in the information gathering process.

Finding Journals in the Library — A Quick Overview

If you're looking for articles on your research topic, start with a database search.

If you're trying to figure out which databases to search, start with Research by Subject.

If you're trying to find out if the Library subscribes to a particular journal, start with the Schaffer Library Catalog and do a Title Search (with the Journals/Serials Format menu pulled down) or click on Periodical Titles and browse or search keyword.

Just Starting a Research Project:
If you are just starting a research project and are looking for articles on your topic, then you want to start with a database search. A database search will help you identify useful articles on your research topic, and many databases deliver the actual articles in full text online.

Choosing a Research Database:
If you are looking for some guidance on how to choose a database best suited to your own research interests, start in the Research by Subject area of the Library website. The library subscribes to a number of general-purpose and discipline-specific databases, and Research By Subject identifies useful print and electronic resources for all of Union's courses and programs.

Library Periodical Subscriptions:
If you have already done your database search (or are looking at a reference in a bibliography) and now want to see if the Library subscribes to a particular journal, start with the search page of the Schaffer Library Catalog. There are two primary options for finding periodicals—clicking on Title Search and searching with the Journals/Serials Format menu pulled down or clicking on Periodical Titles and either browsing or searching by title keyword.

Electronic Access to Journals:
Some of the journals the Library subscribes to in print format are also available electronically. The record in the catalog contains a link to the electronic version. Click here for a complete listing of electronic journal subscriptions.

Other Ways to Access Electronic Journals:
If you want to see if a particular journal is available electronically from any of the Library's full text databases, start with the search page of the Schaffer Library Catalog, click on Periodical Titles, and choose Periodical Titles Available Through Aggregated Databases.

Where in the Building are Periodicals Shelved?
Most titles are arranged alphabetically in the basement, unless otherwise noted.  For current subscriptions, the four most recent issues are shelved in the Periodical Reading Room on the 1st Floor. Clicking on the "Where is It?" link will bring up the appropriate map.

These maps will help you to see the areas where periodicals are shelved:

Basement       Oversize Periodicals, Periodicals A-Z, Classified Periodicals

First Floor       Current Periodicals Reading Room, Microforms
