Schaffer Library provides access through its webpage to many scholarly indexes and abstracts which you will need to search in order to find relevant articles for your project and paper.

This course will primarily consult the following databases:

ECONLIT

The American Economic Association's electronic bibliography indexes more than thirty years of economics literature from around the world. Compiled and abstracted in an easily searchable format ECONLIT provides a comprehensive index of journal articles, books, book reviews, collective volume articles, working papers and dissertations.

AMERICA HISTORY & LIFE

This bibliographic reference covers the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Published since 1964, the database comprises over 530,000 bibliographic entries for periodicals dating back to 1954. Additional bibliographical entries are constantly added to the databases from editorial projects such as retrospective coverage of journals issues published prior to 1954.

SOCIAL SCIENCE INDEX WITH FULL TEXT

SocINDEX with Full Text contains full text for 242 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 72 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for 547 books and monographs, and full text for 6,711 conference papers. This is an EBSCO Database contains many articles available in full text.

To help manage your searching in any EBSCO Database create a MY EBSCO Library Account.

JSTOR

The Journal Storage project is a nonprofit organization which produces an electronic database of back issues of important academic publications. Articles from these journals are available in PDF (portable document format) format for downloading or printing.

There are a four basic ways to bring up an article that is available in JSTOR:

1. Search JSTOR using Article Locator.
2. Search JSTOR using Key Words.
3. Schaffer Library Online Catalog: Title of Journal - in print or electronic format.
4. Link from a search in another database right to the JSTOR article.

Search in JSTOR using Article Locator

If you have the complete article citation or if you have only some of the information (author and article title but now the name of the journal), use the Article Locator.

Example:

Find the article by W.K. Hutchinson, "The self-sufficiency of the antebellum South: estimates of food supply." which appeared in the Journal of Economic History, Vol. 31, No. 3 September 1971 pp. 591-612.

• Opening the title hotlink will bring up the first page of the article.
• Now, go to the top of this JSTOR page and open the link for SET PREFERENCES.
• Select Downloading preferences.
• Select Economy PDF as your preference.
• Press the Set Downloading Preference button.
• Preferences are set; open the link that will return you to your session.
• Setting preferences will avoid having to set your preferences each time you bring up an article.
• Now select the hotlink at the top of the JSTOR page for Download.
• The complete article should display on your computer screen.
• Print using the Adobe print icon not the web browser print function.

Search in JSTOR

This function allows searching one or many journals. Be certain to limit your search for better results by using the Advanced Search. A basic JSTOR search will look in all parts of the article for your search terms.

Example:

Find articles on slavery in the United States.

• Open the link for the Advanced Search.
• Type slavery and select "article title".
• Type United States and select "article title".
• Limit to article.
• Limit date 1940 to 2004
• Select disciplines:
  • African American Studies (8 journals)
  • Economics (52 journals)
  • History (69 journals)
  • Political Science (43 journals)
  • Population Studies (10 journals)
  • Sociology (45 journals)
• Search results: 15 hits

Try different terms in different fields to expand or narrow your results.

JOURNALS/FINDING JOURNALS IN SCHAFFER LIBRARY

Articles in Journals which are not available Full Text in a search database or which do not link from the search database to the online catalog may still be available at Schaffer.

• Look for the journal title in the Library Catalog by going to:

JOURNALS/ORDERING ARTICLE THROUGH ILLIAD ILL

Articles not available in print or electronic format here at Union College may be ordered through ILLiad ILL. Set up your account with your user name and password using your Union College email user name and password. Most articles are received electronically and will be posted to your ILLiad account as soon as they are received. Use the Photocopy Request form for ordering articles.
