Holocaust survivor to speak on campus for Yom HaShoah

Union College Hillel will observe Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Memorial Day, Sunday.

The purpose of the day is to remember the six million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust and the experiences of those who survived.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Reamer Campus Center. Herb Lewis, a Holocaust survivor, will be the speaker.

Born in 1926 as Chaim Lazerowitz in Poland, Lewis was sent to the work camp Skarzysko-Kamienna in 1941 then to the Chenstochova slave labor camps. He was taken to Buchenwald and then to Flossberg where he was liberated in 1945. After World War II, he worked for the U.S. Army in Germany and then emigrated to the U.S.

The day of remembrance was started in 1951, and is recognized by most Jews in the world.
