The members of the women’s hockey team are the Kenney Community Center Volunteers of the Week.
The team has been participating in countless projects and programs for the community throughout the school year. With many different events, including Try Hockey Day, Stride Event, SYHA Day at Union and Skate with the Dutchwomen, the team volunteered their time and talent to Schenectady youth to help improve their hockey skills.
In January, the team hosted its annual Pink at the Rink event, where they raised over $3,000 for the American Cancer Society through selling raffle tickets, shirts, bracelets, ribbons and hosting a live auction.
During a visit to Van Corlaer Elementary School, the team was able to answer student questions before finally playing a game of floor hockey against some students who had been selected by their classmates.
In March, all members of the team also put their names into the bone marrow registry. Later that month, the team also volunteered their time to the local Stick It to Brain Cancer Tournament, which raised over $20,000 for brain tumor research. They also participated in the annual Relay for Life.
For the second year, the team also organized and hosted the STRIDE Teen Dance, with a theme of “Hollywood.” STRIDE Adaptive Sports is an organization that provides sports leagues and events for individuals with disabilities.
