David Peretti ’14 and Carissa Vazzana ’13, organizers of Justin’s Just Out Home Run Derby, are this week’s Kenney Community Center Volunteers of the Week.
The event was a home run derby on the College’s softball field where local news and radio personalities will be competing against Union students. Proceeds of the competition will go toward cancer research on behalf of Justin Lloyd ’16, a member of the baseball team who was diagnosed earlier this year.
“Justin is a phenomenal kid and is probably one of the strongest kids I know so it only seemed right to do an event in his name. Hopefully it catches on and becomes an annual event at Union,” Lloyd’s teammate and captain, Peretti, said.
“The baseball team and their efforts selling “lloydstrong” bracelets inspired SAAC to get involved and create the Home Run Derby. Justin has been an inspiration to us all and has reminded us what is important in life,” Vazzana, president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, said.
Peretti, a biology major, is also a member of Team Impact, and has recently volunteered by visiting and playing games with children in the Oncology ward. He and the baseball team also organized “lloydstrong,” where they sold bracelets and donated all proceeds to cancer research.
Captain of the volleyball team and a member of U-Sustain, Vazzana has helped put on various events through the SAAC, including Pink at the Rink, Runs, Ribs and Reggae, and the Annual Family Feud Tournament. “As President of SAAC, myself and the committee has worked very hard this year to make community service our main focus,” she said. A political science major and history minor, Vazzana has also spent time as a pediatric volunteer at Albany Medical Center.
