Dutchman Dip taking the plunge to help those fighting cancer

The second-annual Dutchmen Dip will take place on March 9.

The event is a fundraiser started last year to support Kristen Shinebarger, daughter of the Director of Student Services, Shelly Shinebarger, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. The rare form of cancer targets bones and the surrounding tissue, and Kristen wears a prosthetic as a result of having her leg amputated below the knee.

This year, the Dutchmen Dip will not only support Kristen, but also two other Union students who have been diagnosed with forms of cancer in the last year: Justin Lloyd ’16 and Nate Greenberg ’14.

Students volunteer to slide down a 30-foot inflatable slide, or jump into freezing water, and all of the proceeds will benefit the families of Lloyd, Shineberger and Greenberg. This year, Colleges Against Cancer and the Dutchmen Athletics department hope to raise $15,000.
