Assistant Vice President for Innovation Partnerships

Reporting to the Vice President for Research and working in collaboration with the University’s senior leadership ETEC team, this professional will be responsible for coordinating and advancing the interests of the University at Albany in developing and expanding strategic public-private collaborative opportunities to create long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with companies, increase industry sponsored research, and foster the development of spinoff companies from the University consistent with the objectives of the University’s ETEC initiative.
- Prioritizing and coordinating numerous planning and implementation activities among the various stakeholders in this research, education, and economic development initiative, including, but not limited to units within the University, SUNY, other governmental entities, and business and industry; completing assigned projects on time and within budget
- Must be able to consider and synthesize budget, finance, social, and organizational opportunities and constraints in developing research and public-private partnerships
- Work with general counsel as required
- Responsible for fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and supporting commercialization efforts, informed by industry needs, leveraging the academic and technological strengths of the University
- Must be able to work independently but collegially, communicate effectively, display initiative, and demonstrate professionalism, cultivating relationships with faculty, private entities, public agencies, educational interests, alumni, and the entrepreneurial and investment communities
- Duties will include routine progress updates and briefings to stakeholders and a high degree of interaction with the University’s senior leadership ETEC team and emerging and established business interests.
- Limited travel may be required.
- The position requires a strong commitment to integrity and ethical conduct.
- Other duties will be assigned, as necessary, to advance the ETEC initiative.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization

- Minimum of five years of prior experience in developing and advancing research and economic development initiatives

- Minimum of five years of demonstrated prior experience in business development, including developing partnerships between universities and industry

- Minimum of five years experience in staffing and supervisory responsibilities

- Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills

- Established relationships and experience with the investment community

- Broad understanding of industry and investment community trends and needs and experience in developing industry partnerships

- Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and electronic communications

- The candidate must address in their application their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Master’s degree or higher

- Experience and understanding in navigating State and Federal statutory and regulatory requirements in areas including, but not limited to private use restrictions, finance, competitive bidding, and other areas of contracts and procurement

- Contract negotiation and management experience

- Grant writing experience

- Certification in Project Management
