Description
This Coordinator for Sustainability is responsible for:
60% Student and Staff Sustainability Awareness and Behavior Change
- Responsible for ensuring education of the residence hall communities and residence life staff on issues including recycling, water and electricity conservation, energy efficiency, consumption, transportation, etc., to promote environmentally sustainable practices.
- In coordination with HDS facilities and related campus units, educates the residence hall communities about recycling, energy conservation, opening, and end-of-year donation/recycling programs.
- In coordination with HDS dining services, educates the residence hall communities about food waste reduction, reusable items for food consumption, and other sustainability practices/behaviors related to food consumption.
- In coordination with the CU environmental center, supports university sustainability initiatives in and outside the residence halls and dining centers. Works directly with the environmental center recycling manager, energy program manager, sustainable transportation program manager, and sustainable practices program manager to develop educational and social programs for the residence halls and dining centers that effectively raise awareness re: sustainability as well as promote behavioral change.
- Collaborates and communicates with hall staff (hall directors, resident assistants), residence hall association (RHA), hall councils, national residence hall honorary (NRHH), students, residential academic program/residential college faculty and staff, and administrators to offer sustainability education programs, bulletin boards, and service projects and advance initiatives throughout the campus residence halls.
- Coordinates, oversees, and advises the eco representative program which includes hall council eco representatives, hall resident advisor liaisons and other interested residence hall students.
- Plans, implements, and evaluates current sustainability programs on a continual basis (i.e. warmer Will Vill program, end of the year community garage sale, eco star challenge, composting programs, talk about Tuesday organic farming event, etc.).
- Researches and evaluates best practices for sustainability initiatives and programs.
- Evaluates and assesses programs and services’ effectiveness to understand the extent to which sustainability programs are affecting student development and student behavior change.
- Develops and facilitates training sessions for resident assistant staff as required.
- Works with HDS marketing staff to promote departmental sustainability initiatives on the HDS website and within the residence halls and dining centers.
- Helps identify and shape new programs that meet the organization’s mission of reducing the department’s environmental impact and promoting environmental stewardship within the residential student body.
- Assists in long range program and capital projects/construction planning to further the HDS environmental and sustainability commitment.
- Studies the economic impacts of sustainable practices and develops proposals for future departmental efforts.
- Working in collaboration with the student affairs sustainability committee, ensures activities in HDS are consistent with and supportive of the sustainability element of the student affairs strategic plan.
20% Leadership and Teamwork
- Provide exceptional leadership for all professional, classified, and student staff in the sustainability area for HDS. Assist with strategic planning, tactical implementation, assessment, and all committee work in residence life, HDS, and student affairs.
- Provide support in the development and advancement of the organizational philosophy, mission, and programs within HDS.
- Translate the vision, mission, and strategic goals to impact and transform the assigned area.
- Assist in the development and provide leadership for completion of HDS strategic goals and initiatives.
- Guide area staff in gaining a clear understanding and articulation of the mission, values, and strategic goals of the department.
- Share leadership, vision creation, resources, and strategic implementation in the pursuit of campus initiatives, implementing them at the area level.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with on and off-campus stakeholders such as the environmental center, volunteer resource center, office of student involvement, activities and leadership development office, the CU dialogues project, the student outreach and retention center for equity, etc.
5% Administration and Financial Management
- Follow all federal, state, university and departmental budget procedures.
- Attend residence life staff training sessions as scheduled.
- Oversee residence life budgets and expenditures for sustainability programs.
- Participate on committees within HDS, student affairs, and the university.
5% Emergency Response
- On a case by case basis, serve in an on-call role through a rotation with area coordinators and/or assistant directors. The on-call roll for after-hours emergency response may require reporting to the residence hall community to support and consult with those impacted or in first line of response roles.
- Provide crisis intervention and emergency management as needed.
10% Diversity, Inclusion and Equity
- Integrate diversity, inclusion, equity and environmental justice/ecological justice into development of programs, practices, policies, and processes.
- Educate students and staff in respecting and understanding cultural differences.
- Support and assist traditionally underrepresented students(s) by utilizing campus resources, and developing creative and diverse programming.
- Maintain knowledge and education of self in areas of diversity, inclusion and equity
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- One year of post-bachelor’s professional experience in housing and residence life, or other student affairs position, which includes knowledge and skills in advising and student leadership development.
- Demonstrated professional leadership, program development, and program implementation experience within a university setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge and professional experience working with sustainability issues specific to recycling, energy use, food consumption, and/or transportation.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of diversity and an ability to work with a wide variety of people while recognizing the needs of underrepresented ethnic, racial, religious and cultural individuals, international students, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, women, and individuals with disabilities. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity.
- Operational knowledge of technology, computer applications, and budgeting.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills, including interpersonal communications, writing, and public speaking and presentations.
Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
- Master’s degree in higher education administration, student personnel administration, counseling, or a related field.
- Two years, or more, of post-bachelor’s professional experience in housing and residence life, or other student affairs position, which includes knowledge and skills in advising and student leadership development.
- Bachelor’s degree in a field related to sustainability.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of assessment and evaluation practices in student affairs.
- Demonstrated ability to formulate and interpret campus policies.
- Demonstrated participation in long-range and short-range strategic planning processes.
- Experience with budget oversight, including budget development and management within a university organization.
