The basic responsibilities of the Counselor are to retain students in adult education through counseling, rapport building, connecting students with
community services; help students to balance family, jobs, and school; respond to and work with students in crisis and teach students appropriate behaviors and responses to difficult situations through modeling and practicing skills with the students. The Counselor reports to the Coordinator of Student Services and performs the following duties:
- Monitors student progress, following up on attendance problems, helping the student to cope
with barriers that may prevent program completion, and discontinuance from a program.
- Enforces policies and procedures outlined in the Student Handbook.
- Collaborates with faculty and administrators to provide effective services to students.
- Provides individual and or group counseling to assigned students.
- Conducts orientation for new students, and provides course schedules and Student Handbooks.
- Refers students to appropriate community services and or programs for services unavailable at the EOC.
- Maintains records of student counseling sessions.
- Submits all reports in a timely fashion.
- Provides support for other counselors’ students, in the event of a counselor absence. Participates in weekly Counselor and Instructional Department meetings; Student Services
meetings.
- Conducts on-going academic counseling sessions with each student to determine his/her needs and goals.
- Maintains open communications with community agencies/resources.
- Establishes and implements a professional development plan.
- Assists in the development and implementation of Center wide activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or a related field; Experience in goal setting, educational and program support counseling with adults, preferably in a postsecondary school setting; Demonstrated organizational skills, ability to work with a diverse and multicultural population, basic computer competency, and knowledge and familiarity of local community services.
