Energy Management: The Director leads the ongoing strategy and development of the College’s energy management programs. S/he will review designs of new systems for compliance with best engineering practices, with the College’s commitment to carbon neutrality, and conformance with College standards on capital projects. The Director assesses HVAC systems campus-wide and coordinates equipment maintenance and replacement to increase overall efficiency. S/he is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to sharply reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Sustainability: The incumbent serves as a key member of the Committee on Environmental Sustainability, which promotes implementation of the Oberlin College Environmental Policy, facilitates environmental initiatives, and fosters a culture of environmental stewardship. The Director serves on the planning group for the Oberlin Project; a college-city partnership and model of integrated sustainability. The Director manages necessary resources of budgets, timelines, and staff, including the Sustainability Fellow who is responsible for implementing programmatic and behavioral initiatives among students, faculty, and staff. The Director reports on greenhouse gas emissions and fulfills data collection and reporting requirements for the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPPC).
Qualifications
Requirements: Degree in Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering, or Energy Management with a focus on energy planning at a systems level, or the equivalent in education and experience. Minimum 10 years general engineering experience; or as an alternative, demonstrated leadership in the building design and construction industry including systems design, with a proven track record of success. Ability to evaluate and recommend viable and sustainable alternative energy options, including renewable energy, to service a campus and community long-term and achieve the College’s commitment to carbon-neutrality. Demonstrable knowledge and experience in quantitative analysis, sustainable practices, green technology, and related industry trends.
Dynamic leader adept at navigating politically diverse environments with the ability to build consensus and cooperation. Ability to work as a team leader and member. Able to effectively communicate through public presentations and written correspondence. Alignment with Oberlin College’s educational mission and willingness to educate the community on relevant issues as necessary; strong interest and knowledge in the politics of sustainability, including its social equity component.
Desired Qualifications: Professional Engineer, licensed in the State of Ohio, or able to be so within one year. LEED AP, or Certified Energy Manager (CEM). Institutional experience working with central heating plants with low and high pressure steam. Experience working in higher education and campus environments is highly desirable as is a career history that demonstrates the capacity for increasing responsibility including staff management. Fluent in MS Office, MS Project, understanding of databases and specialty engineering software.
