Program Dates for 2015: September 2-5
**Registration Opens June 1, 2015**
Community Experience is an urban-based program facilitating student's introduction to campus life through community-service in the Schenectady area. 50 first-years and 10 upper-class leaders will participate in a two and a half-day urban experience. Students will work together in groups in a variety of community service settings. During the day, the program provides students with rewarding volunteer activities. Students will also learn more about their new city by visiting local restaurants and other attractions in the evenings.
Community Experience participants will learn about the opportunities Union College students have to make a difference in the community and what Schenectady has to offer. This experience provides an opportunity to make early friends with other first year students, and prepares students to become actively engaged members of the larger community while at Union. The program is run by the Kenney Community Center, Union’s Community Outreach Department.
Students who in enroll in the program should have an interest in community service and a desire to work as part of a team. Students will be assigned in small groups to a Student Leader. Past projects have included Habitat for Humanity, Vale Urban Farm, COCOA House, City Mission, Museum of Innovation and Science and many others. Every year the opportunities change.
Wednesday, September 2:
Students move into their Residence Halls. Welcome and orientation meeting for students in the evening followed by social activity with the Student Leaders.
Thursday, September 3 and Friday, September 4:
Service projects during the day followed by social activities in the evening.
Saturday, September 5:
Large group activity in the morning followed by lunch and reflection activity. Program ends in the mid afternoon.
Sunday, September 6:
Move-in day for all first year students/Regular Orientation begins

Deadline to apply is Friday, Aug. 7th 2015
We can accept a limit of 50 students. ** Please note: the program tends to fill quickly and is usually full before the deadline!
Cost: $225.00 applied directly to your tuition – includes all activities and meals (breakfast Thursday, lunch Saturday). Charges are applied after the program date and cancellations are allowed until August 14th.
Registrants will be notified by mail regarding acceptance into the program.
All charges are non-refundable after the 14th of August 2015.
