Boren Fellowship or Scholarship
Sponsor: U.S. Government
Purpose: NSEP Boren Fellowships and Scholarships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. interests, and enable U.S. students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add an international dimension to their education. It is hoped that recipients of Boren awards will comprise an ever-growing cadre of experts whose enriched educational and professional experiences will enable them to provide leadership and direction in our national commitment to economic growth, international peace and security, and the promotion of democracy abroad.
Amount: The maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000. A maximum of $12,000 per semester for up to two semesters ($24,000 total) is available for overseas study. A maximum of $12,000 is available for a program of domestic only study.
Length of funding: minimum of one semester and a maximum of two academic years
Min. requirements:
- U.S. citizen
- Either enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university
- Including a plan for language study in a modern language other than English in your application.
Additional criteria: NSEP Boren Fellowship support may not be used for study of French or Spanish unless such language instruction is at an advanced level or combined with the study of applied science or engineering.
The NSEP service requirement stipulates that an award recipient work in the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, State, or the Intelligence Community. If, after making a full and good faith effort (according to conditions and rules established by NSEP), an award recipient demonstrates to NSEP that no appropriate position is available in one of these agencies, he or she may work in any U.S. federal department or agency. There is also an expectation that NSEP Boren Fellows will use the language or regional expertise acquired as a result of the award in their work for the U.S. government.
Subject restrictions: NSEP Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). Study of the countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand is excluded.

Carnegie Junior Fellows

Purpose: Carnegie Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates in Washington D.C.
Amount: $2,750 per month. A full benefits package is also provided.
Length of funding: 1 year fellowship.
Min. requirements: 3.7 GPA and either U.S. Citizenship or eligibility to work in US.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX)
Sponsor: German government
Purpose: Provides young Americans with an understanding of everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany.
Amount: Full-year scholarship includes round-trip transatlantic flight, university tuition, language training, living stipend, and program-related travel costs in Germany. The program begins in July and includes two months of intensive German language training in Germany (no prior German language knowledge required), four months of classroom instruction at a German university or college of applied sciences, and a five-month internship in a participant’s career field.
Length of funding: 12 months.
Min. requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and 18-24 years old at the beginning of the program.
Subject restrictions: business, vocational, scientific, engineering, technical, and agricultural fields, though applicants from all fields are encouraged to apply.

DAAD Graduate Scholarship for Study/Research in Germany
Sponsor: Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD)
Purpose: To enhance German Studies at American and Canadian universities and promote international academic relations and cooperation by offering mobility for students.
Amount: Monthly stipends range from € 795 to € 975 depending on the level of academic advancement. DAAD provides each scholarship recipient with a lump sum between € 520 and € 1,022.58, to defray travel expenses. DAAD pays the costs of health, accident and liability insurance with a German insurance company, less € 10.23 per month to be paid by the scholarship holder.
Length of funding: Up to 2 years.
Min. requirements: Applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens enrolled full-time in a degree program at an accredited US or Canadian university. Foreign nationals may be able to apply if they have been full-time graduate students at an accredited US or Canadian university for more than one academic year at the time of application.

Davis Projects for Peace

Purpose: Davis Projects for Peace, is an invitation to undergraduates at the American colleges and universities in the Davis United World College Scholars Program to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer of 2010. The projects judged to be the most promising and do-able will be funded at $10,000 each. Purpose: The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships seek to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. To facilitate this goal the Fellowship grants awards at the Predoctoral, Dissertation and, Postdoctoral levels to students whom demonstrate excellence, a commitment to diversity and, a desire to enter the professorate.

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship

Purpose: The program seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The goal is to attract outstanding students from all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds, who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State.
Amount: The fellowship award includes tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years of college and during the first year of graduate study with reimbursement for books and round-trip travel.
Length of funding: Three years.
