Award Date: March 2013
Union College Hillel has been awarded a Holocaust Remembrance Grant in the amount of $5,450 from the David and Fela Shapell Family Foundation and Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life to support programming designed to examine the Jewish resistance during the war. Designed by Director of Union College Hillel Bonnie Cramer, the subject of resistance will have three parts in different mediums:
- A showing of the movie Defiance with a prologue and epilogue by internationally renowned Steven Berk, Henry & Sally Schaffer Professor of Holocaust and Jewish Studies at Union College.
- A testimony by a witness, Murray Jaros, on Yom HaShoah. Jaros was a child during the war and spent it in the woods in similar conditions to those depicted in Defiance. His testimony will close with the Holocaust kaddish and lighting the yellow yahrzeit memorial candle.
- A presentation by Shira Ginsburg of Bubby's Kitchen on April 28, 2013 at 1 p.m. in the GE Theatre at Proctors. Ginsburg is a cantor living in New York City with a one-woman show in which she retells her Bubby's story of being in the woods with the Bielsky brothers. This presentation is the capstone of the three events. Ginsburg's Bubby actually ended up in the town east of Schenectady, Troy, and her mother is still in the area working for Daughter's of Sarah, the Jewish old-age home.
