Summer Break (odd years only)
The China mini-term focuses on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has been practiced for thousands of years. Up to 15 students are accepted to take this journey into the world of TCM, Chinese society and its medical practices. The group will seek to understand its theoretical foundations and practices – how this medical practice changes over time, how modern society adapts to changes and how society as a whole deals with modern medical and health problems. We will also look at how other countries could adopt TCM into their medical system.
Course of Study
Morning classes consist of classes on tui na, or massage therapy, acupuncture and theories of traditional medicine. In the afternoons there are two-hour-long seminars on theories of pharmacology, food cures and medical reforms, and clinic and pharmacy visits. We will also travel to key sites within China. The host college is Tianjin University of Traditional Medicine, one of the oldest and most renowned schools of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Tianjin is the fourth largest city in China, located 75 miles southeast of Beijing. It takes 30 minutes by bullet train to and from Beijing.
