GUIDELINES FOR UNITAS IN 15 ARTICLES

Article 1
Role of the UNITAS Board (hereafter called the Board) to be advisory to the president of Union College regarding the fostering of diversity and community at this institution. The Board will be proactive, accenting communication, promotion of harmony and long-term planning.
 
Article 2
Membership (in celebration of the nine Muses) to be 9.
 
Article 3
President of Union College to select members of the Board from faculty of Divisions I-IV, staff, administration, student body or alumni. The primary criterion for appointment is demonstrated achievement in the fostering of cooperation, community and diversity at the College with Professors Twitty J. Styles and Carl J. George to be voting members of the Board for an initial term of three years.
 
Article 4
Other, already existing agencies of the College with strongly related goals to be represented through membership or regular advisory attendance of meetings.
 
Article 5:
Terms for nine voting members to be two years for five members and three years for four members with terms limited to six consecutive years.
 
Article 6
Board will meet (at least) six times per year, preferably at the beginning and middle of each academic term.
 
Article 7
Board will elect its own convener, secretary and treasurer at the first meeting of the fall term each to serve one year with option of reelection to a second year.
 
Article 8
The secretary will maintain a written record (available to all members of the College) of meetings; the treasurer will continually advise the Board on the status of the UNITAS Fund and on dollar amounts available for programs.
 
Article 9
Board will cooperate whenever possible with individuals and groups of the College to financially-and otherwise-support common goals.
 
Article 10
Board will learn of, and take guidance from, similar programs at other institutions.
 
Article 11
In accord with Article 1, the Board will welcome proposal(s) fostering UNITAS goals from any source.
 
Article 12
Board will welcome proposals and comments at least once per term from the College Community by announcement in The Concordiensis and, as needed, other means.
 
Article 13
Board, under direction of the convener, will strive to enhance, by various means, the dollar amount of the UNITAS Fund.
 
Article 14
Board will begin formal meetings during the fall term of the 1997-1998 academic year and henceforth receive proposals during the winter and spring terms.
 
Article 15
Board may propose to alter these articles by a two-thirds vote for the full Board membership.
