Frequently Asked Questions
How can I integrate writing into my course?
There are two approaches to integrating writing in courses.
- Writing assignments can be used to achieve cognitive purposes: to assist students in learning or analyzing complex or unfamiliar concepts in a course.
- Writing assignments can also be used for rhetorical or communicative purposes: to help students learn to communicate as professionals in the discipline.
These two functions are not mutually exclusive. Gen Ed courses may have more emphasis on using writing to assist learning while courses in the major may have more emphasis on the communicative goals. Any WAC course can integrate both, assigning writing to help students learn and to help them communicate more effectively. Here are some articles or websites that provide information on both ways of integrating writing into courses.
