Why did you choose Union?
My college search process was a tough one. My parents did not go to college and it was hard finding support in knowing where and how to apply to schools. All I knew is that I wanted to go to a small liberal arts college. Union, surprisingly, was not on my original list. My school counselor recommended it to me and, when I did my research on Union, I decided to put it on my list. My visit to campus solidified my choice. A current student took me to eat in Reamer, meet all of her friends, play some games and I had a blast. Everyone welcomed me as one of their own friends, told me about their lives, asked questions and even bought me snacks. The happiness that I felt and the overall experience that Union gave me is ultimately what made my time so special and made me want to enroll as a student! I did not realize until then that talking to students played such a big role in the search process. Now, this is something that I try to emulate on my tours and as an intern to show others why Union is the best.
How do you describe Union to your friends and family?
When I describe Union to my friends and family, I tell them that it is my home away from home. I tell them that I have been able to find support through different networks on campus whether it be through fellow tour guides, AOP, my sorority, the Body Project or within my major. Union has allowed me to make these connections and immerse myself in a community where I can be heard. Having this support all around me made me feel comfortable in this environment; comfortable enough to reach out to anyone for help. I have met with professors who have never had me as a student for advice with grad school applications, research opportunities and even made multiple appointments at the career center as a first-year student! I could not have imagined myself doing all that I have done with my three years here. The friends that I have made here are my biggest inspirations. We encourage one another to work harder, study harder, but also find time to relax and have fun.
What has been your favorite class assignment at Union?
My favorite class assignment was in my “School Social Work” class. For this assignment, we visited Zoller Elementary School in Schenectady and interviewed a teacher, social worker and principal in order to learn more about what social work looks like in a school setting.
What is your favorite place off-campus in Schenectady?
My favorite place off-campus in Schenectady would have to be Ambition. This is one of the many spots where I love to get breakfast in the morning with friends or family. The atmosphere and decorations make it a unique spot to get some good food.
