Majors:

Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies (GSWS); Spanish and Hispanic Studies

Hometown:

Metuchen, New Jersey

Why I chose Union:

I went to visit Union in early April of 2013. As soon as I stepped onto campus I felt at home. The student population was so incredibly friendly and the people in Admissions got me very excited about Union. My host made me feel even more welcomed and at home. She treated me like someone she had known for years, and I could relate to her because we were both cheerleaders. She told me she wanted to restart the cheer program at Union, and I told her if I came to Union I would like to do the same. Once I returned home from my visit, I knew this is where I had to go to school. Union felt like my second home instantaneously.

Study Abroad:

I studied abroad in Seville, Spain during Fall 2015 trimester.

Internships:

I have had various internships throughout my college years with organizations including: Uncommon Schools, New Jersey SEEDS and Planned Parenthood.

Favorite professor:

My favorite would have to be Professor Foroughi. She is an amazing person and she convinced me to become a Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies major. She is a feminist and she is not afraid to speak her mind. She has inspired me to be a better woman and person. I love that I can go into her office anytime and talk to her about a class, life, or my career. She is my adviser and she has granted me the honor of being my adviser for my senior thesis. She has written various recommendations for me for jobs, scholarships and so on. I see her outside of the classroom participating in numerous walks and marches around campus and in the community. She and I have walked together in the Pride Walk, the March Against Sexual Assault/Sexual Violence, and the MLK March each year.

Favorite class:

My favorite class would have to be my GSWS Capstone Seminar on Antigone and Others. I have never been so challenged at my time at Union as I have been in this class. However, I appreciate the challenge. I worked with Professor Marso who is one of the most brilliant minds on campus. The work was tough and pushed me to look at the woman’s experience from an ancient Greek perspective. My term paper was about Helen of Troy and whether or not she was considered a whore, a princess, or a goddess. My research was extensive and I ended up earning an “A” on the paper. I cried tears of joy because I knew despite all of the challenges, I was able to succeed with Professor Marso’s help.

Favorite activity:

I love to sing with my band “Between Lines and Spaces” at events on campus.

Favorite place on campus:

My favorite place on campus would have to be Jackson’s Gardens. It is eight acres of beautiful nature, with trees, a creek, and flowers. It is my escape from campus for a moment. It is beautiful and I love to hang out there with friends or jam with my band. I have even had a few classes out there as well. In the fall it is a great spot to get some homework done. I have even written some of my best papers out there.

Favorite local restaurant:

My favorite local restaurant is definitely Pizza King. Their pizza is homemade and it’s amazing.

Favorite food on campus:

Dutch Hollow’s lentil soup
