George J. Mitchell Scholarship

Sponsor: US-Ireland Alliance

Purpose: The George J. Mitchell Scholarship is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service. Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one academic year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Opportunity: Provides tuition for one year of postgraduate study on the island of Ireland along with accommodation and a stipend for living expenses and travel.

Selection Criteria: Applicants are judged on three criteria–

1) scholarship

2) leadership

3) a sustained commitment to community and public service.

Additional Criteria: Age 18 but not yet 30 on October 1 of the application year. Union College institutional endorsement.

Citizenship Requirements: U.S. citizen

Subject Restrictions: None

National Deadline: Early October

Campus Deadline:  The prior spring term — you must apply for an institutional endorsement in the spring term of junior or senior year to receive institutional endorsement for the following fall’s application.
