  • Q.

I suggest having some room sprays in the bathroom to freshen the air sometimes :-)

Comment from Bulletin Board on 10-27-2016
The automatic air re-fresher is set at 90 second intervals. That may not be suitable freshening for all tastes but leaving a bottle of freshener in the restrooms proved futile because it always disappears. If you have a delicate system, perhaps you should consider using the restroom on the 3rd floor. It smells better :-)

Comment from Bulletin Board on 06-06-2016
I am sorry to hear this. The housekeeping staff does not come in on the weekends until Sunday night. Unfortunately, these restrooms are in a high-traffic area and are subject to over-use. • Q.

Why do we keep getting new wall art? It's unpleasant and distracting.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 05-25-2016
Being critical of art is a way of showing art respect. - Jerry Saltz. While you dislike the art, our intention was to inspire you and create a dialog. We are sorry that you don't care for the installations and apologize if it creates too much of a distraction.

  • Q.

    Make a meditation area. Amen.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 05-24-2016
Nice idea, but too many competing priorities. Find a quiet corner in the library then find your center. Would it help if we supplied a few yoga mats? The sunny stairwell on the east side of the building would be a great secluded spot.

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

Hi, I like the comfy bench tables that you've added! Could we get some on the 2nd floor by the windows? Also, the new round white tables don't have enough room! What about white rectangle tables?

And then we can have a group hug and sing Kumbaya. Excellent idea! And, we think you're special too!

The first floor bathrooms should be cleaned more often if possible, please!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 05-02-2016

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

Please replace the Apple mice with mice that have working scroll wheels. Almost all of them either only scroll in one direction or don't scroll at all, making navigating the page really tedious. Thanks!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 05-01-2016
Thank you for the heads up. I will see if ITS can replace the mice on the Macs. The good news is that we'll be replacing all of the computers in the library this summer!

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

Why do the square tables keep being removed and replaced by round ones? It is not conducive to studying and working, because all our books / notebooks / computers are square! Upgrades are nice, but can't we just keep the basic wooden chair and table? The heights are perfect and more room for people to sit / work. Thanks!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-28-2016
Thanks very much for taking the time to express your concern - I appreciate it very much. No tables have been removed from the building. The rectangular tables have been moved to the area next to the area next to the reference collection. We are adding new tables and chairs, as well as reupholstering existing chairs, so that we have more seating options for students. The round tables were an experiment and based upon their use, a successful one.

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

I don't understand why we are getting rid of perfectly good and comfortable furniture that is efficient for spreading out and getting things done. The new furniture, the fluorescent white round tables, especially, looks like it belongs in a fancy FroYo place where you go to gossip with friends. The library is for STUDYING and the more uncomfortable it gets, the less I'll want to come here. RIP to the comfy green chairs on the second floor.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-28-2016
I am not sure what green chairs you are referring to on the 2nd floor - do you mean the wing chairs? We have been reupholstering the wing chairs. The upholsterer takes about 6 chairs at a time. When the chairs come back they are even more comfortable than before!

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

Need to allow natural light upstairs! It's cold outside and there is no point in having nice windows if they are closed.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-26-2016
I agree that natural light is a fabulous thing. And we do raise the shades regularly. At times, however, the solar heat does increase the temperature in the building to the point where people ask us to lower the shades. If the shades are down and you want us to raise them just ask one of the service desks.

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

I really don't like the paintings on the pillars on the first floor. I like the white ones.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-25-2016
So sorry to hear the news. The installation is only here for a brief time, then we'll have new artwork. Thank you for your feedback!

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

Thank you for responding to us!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-23-2016
You're welcome! Thank you for sharing your comments and questions. Please continue to tell us how we're doing and making suggestions for improvements. Have a great term!

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

We need more closed off study spaces like the ones in the basement, they're always in use!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-23-2016
Yes this is a very common request. Unfortunately, we can't do much to change the structure of the building. We will, however, look for creative ways to utilize furniture to make study spaces more suitable for individual quiet study.

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

Turn off the heat, especially upstairs where we get solar heating

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-22-2016
We've asked facilities to adjust the HVAC. If you are getting too much sun on the 2nd floor ask a Circ staff person to lower the shades

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

Love the new tables but there seems to be less table space?

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-21-2016
Yes, the round tables offer a little less surface area but we have added more tables to the building for student use

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-20-2016

Could you help keep the computers in English? Sometimes they're changed and cannot be fixed easily.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-12-2016
I will see if ITS can lock the English on the computers. Although, learning a new language is a great way to be a true global citizen!

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

Why do we have a really nice piano in the library where no one can play it without disturbing other people?

Comment from Bulletin Board on 04-02-2016
The piano used to belong to John Bigelow, Union Class of 1835. It is part of our permanent collection. A few students have played it in the early hours of the morning. It is here as a historical artifact more than a musical instrument.

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

Free coffee starting week 10 since everyone runs out of declining by then. Have the dogs on Wed!

There are very few people studying in the library on Friday (before finals), if we don't serve coffee that evening and Tuesday evening during exams we could afford to serve coffee during Tuesday & Wednesday of week 10. What would you prefer? We're glad that you like the dogs! We do, too!!

    FREE SNACKS! SNACKS! SNACKS!

SPSS is on all of the library computers. You can see all of the other software that ITS supports here: https://its.union.edu/supported-hardware-and-software/supported-software. Send the ITS helpdesk a request for solidworks, they might be willing to purchase a license for it - helpdesk@union.edu

  • Q.

For 63K we deserve free printing!!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 02-29-2016
I feel your pain! But, for the low, low price of 5 cents per page, we're probably saving a few trees. Of course, you could mobilize your classmates and get the student forum to take up the issue.

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

$250,000 over 4 years and I have to pay to print?! What's $50 to you for 10 pages? Not only that but the print quality is crap, please fix the system.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 02-25-2016
WE ALL AGREE!!! I feel your pain! If it were up to me, you could print for free and have free snacks. Milton Friedman and Robert Heinlein would tell you that there is no such thing as a free lunch! Talk to your student representatives!

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

    Snack Station (cafe)

Comment from Bulletin Board on 02-17-2016
We'd love to have a snack station but at the moment we don't have the space or the funds. Sorry we would be open to student groups setting up a table to sell snacks. The proceeds would go to supplies and charity. If you're interested contact Robin at reedr@union.edu

Air fresheners in the bathrooms. There are automatic ones on the wall that dispense periodically.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 02-16-2016
While there are automatic dispensers, they are pretty inefficient. We have asked facilities to replace the current air freshers with better dispensers.

  • Q.

What about a microwave everyone could use to warm up their warm beverages or heat up a meal they brought from home??

Comment from Bulletin Board on 01-14-2016
Not a bad idea but....at the moment we do not have a suitable place to put a microwave. Plus, many students might complain about the noise and smell.

Answered by Robyn Reed, Head of Access Services Librarian

  • Q.

It's way too cold. Get adequate heating!

If it is too cold where you are sitting try moving to a different spot. There are several climate zones in the library. Additionally, let a library staff person know where it is cold and we might be able to ask facilities to do something about it.

    Too noisy in the library!!!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 10-28-2015
Try studying on the 2nd floor behind the glass doors. That is a silent study area. Please avoid the learning commons and the 2nd floor atrium spaces (north/south open areas) on the 2nd floor. They tend to be the loudest areas.

A room where you can talk on the phone. Especially with winter coming!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 10-23-2015
Many students step into the stairwells when it is necessary to make a phone call. The stairwell at the back of the library (east end) is nice and toasty in the winter. Feel free to take a chair with you.

Please: A spot where you can talk on your cell phone.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 10-22-2015
As you know, small rooms for study are at a premium in this library. We really can't afford to devote solely for the purpose of making phone calls. I suggest that you use the back stairwell (east end) of the library for phone calls.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 10-06-2015
Indeed! The wooden chairs are not very comfortable. We are pricing cushions now. Would you prefer removable cushions or should we upholster the existing chairs. Facilities will first check the locks and hooks. Thanks for heads up. Reply: Thank you for your feedback! We will try to get this done during the winter break. If you can't get them to comply check in with the Reference Desk or Circulation Desk and ask ask if a staff person will intervene on your behalf. Please be advised that there are places in the library where students may talk and collaborate. Take care not to study in these spaces if it is not designated as a silent/ quiet study zone. For silent study see the 2nd floor on the east side of the glass doors. Check out the study zone flyer for details.

Thank you for your feedback. The Idea Lab is an experiment. We're trying to give students flexible work spaces for a variety of learning styles. We are going to purchase nesting tables that can be pushed out of the way when it is not needed. It's on casters so roll it in when you need it.

It would be helpful if the quiet areas were more defined and somehow enforced. A few loud people can ruin it for a whole floor trying to study

Comment from Bulletin Board on 02-03-2015
During the regular term there is one silent study area in the library, it is located on the second floor behind the glass doors. However, if a student (or a group of students) is being disruptive please feel free to ask the individual to be quite. If this fails please ask a circulation supervisor to speak to them.

    Lockers for thesis students!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 01-22-2015
Yes, we know. Some things take longer than others. We've identified the space that we want to remove the existing materials before we can install lockers. We will try to get them installed in the next year.

It honestly perplexes me that in this day and age we still don't have gender-neutral bathrooms in Schaffer!

Comment from Bulletin Board on 01-22-2015
We have ordered signs for the restrooms in the basement so that we can make them gender neutral. I am afraid that we are unable to convert the restrooms on the third floor because they are not single stall restrooms.

We need more lights on the 2nd floor.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 12-17-2014
We will pass along your suggestion for additional lights on the second floor. At this time of the semester we naturally see an increase in use of our physical space with a related need for more electrical outlets. The Office of Facilities is reviewing options for adding more lights. Please note that we check out power strips at the Circulation Desk.

How can we make the campus / outside the library non-smoking?

Comment from Bulletin Board on 11-21-2014
I did a little investigating and I have been told that you should contact Eric Noll (nolle@union.edu) about a campus-wide ban. Presently, smokers are supposed to maintain a 25 ft distance from campus buildings.

Some may say I am being a little optimistic, and possibly asking too much, but I really think the library would benefit from its very own coffee shop....and maybe even a laundry room.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 11-09-2014
Hmm, you might be onto something. Although, I hear that when presented with the chance of Laundromat versus coffee shop, the latter will win out. Excellent innovative thinking.

It gets too loud in the lobby pretty frequently. Event the staff talks loudly. Could something be done about this?

Comment from Bulletin Board on 11-04-2014
The lobby is a thoroughfare and as such, it can get pretty loud. We understand that it is also a study space, so the staff has been reminded to be more considerate. Please be advised that there are other areas in the library that might be more suitable for your needs. See our study zones poster for details.

Could you ask tours to do the majority of their talking outside since it's spring and nice out. They could do it in front of the library? A little talking is fine but after 6 tours in a row with 10 minute long speeches it's just inconsiderate.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 03-11-2014
I have forwarded that message to the Admission Office, they train & coordinate the campus tours, please feel free to let them know your concerns as well.

Is there any way that printing could be free and wireless? It's inconvenient that students have to pay to print and it would be easier to be able to print from your laptop and have 24 hours to pick up what you printed.

Comment from Bulletin Board on 01-21-2014
Wireless printing is in the works. ITS is looking at possible vendors and working with the campus print shop to select the best possible set up. These things can take time, so it is projected that wireless printing will be available in 2017. Free printing at least the first few prints are also on the table.
